Hi CSI Project friends! I’m Dawn and I blog about crafting, sewing, recipes and DIY decor over at Designed by Dawn Nicole. I’m an Air Force wife and mom of 3 little ones. I just started back to school for the third time. This time I’m learning Graphic and Web Design. I also just started training for my first half marathon. Yikes! I’m so happy to be here today sharing my Simple Winter Mantel with you.
My mantel has been sitting empty since we took Christmas decorations down a few days after Christmas. I finally got inspired to do something simple and put some wine bottles I recently painted to good use! My goal was to re-purpose things we had around the house already to keep this project free. Here’s how I did it…
The Cake Stand and “Baby It’s Cold Outside” Picture
I painted a black cake stand is a few months old and I had bought it on-sale at Hobby Lobby. I painted it with two coats of silver liquid gilding. See below info on the wine bottles for more detailed instructions on the liquid gilding.
The frame is a gorgeous wintery one I had one hand that was a wedding gift from way back when. I simply did the text in Word and printed it to the same size as the frame. The “cold” font I used is a really cool free one called “Rage“. It’s the same one I used in my blog’s header.
The Silver Wine Bottles
First I took 4 empty wine bottles and soaked them in hot water to get the labels off. Then I painted them with two coats of Martha Stewart’s Silver liquid gilding. I’ve had it on hand for a while but had yet to try it til recently. It’s simple and gives a really cool finish. It’s stinky though and hard to clean off brushes and hands so paint in a well-ventilated area, wear gloves, and use turpentine for your brushes (or use cheap old ones you don’t mind throwing out).
Then I went in my backyard and gathered thin branches that have fallen off the trees. I put one in each wine bottle.
The Hanging Glitter Bulbs and Snowflakes
I went back into the Christmas boxes and pulled out the silvery glittery bulbs which were a few bucks for a container at Walmart before Christmas and hung them on the branches. The snowflakes are simply copy paper. I used my Silhouette Cameo to cut out 16 snowflakes and taped them randomly to the branches.
The cool black branch-like candle holder in the center I bought at Hobby Lobby around Halloween. Then I added a few sugar cookie scented white Glade candles that I got on clearance at Target a few weeks ago.
The decorative glass jar on the end is something my Grandma made me in high school years and I’ve had it ever since (the glass is filled with sand and shimmery pearls and stars).
And there you have it! A simple, wintery mantle that cost me nada!
