Hi there! I am so excited to be here today at The CSI Project! Thank you ladies, for having me. I am Cassie from Primitive & Proper. I specialize in furniture makeovers, but I dabble in a little of the domestic as well. I am mommy to two wonderful kiddos, and wife to one of the good guys. I was so excited to be able to share with you today about one of my favorite topics… BOLD COLOR! I am sure you all have seen “the color of the year”, honeysuckle pink. I couldn’t wait to try this color out on a piece of furniture. I found this dresser at my local Goodwill for $40. It was a bargain, but it was in need of some serious love.
It had several chips in the veneer and also was missing one pull- just the backplate was present. I removed all the hardware and filled in the missing veneer with wood filler, and also filled the holes where the pulls on the bottom drawers had been.
After all the holes and chips were filled, I took the piece outside (with the help of my husband, of course!) and gave it a good sanding with my orbital sander. Once back inside, I drilled new holes so that I could use knobs on the drawers.
Then I wiped it with a damp rag to remove dust. It’s important NOT to use any oil-based cleaning products prior to priming or painting because the paint will not adhere if there is any oily residue left behind.
Once it was primed, it was ready for paint! I had an “oops” color on hand that just happened to be the right shade of pink I was going for. I gave it 3 coats of paint, and then wanted to add some glamour. After all, it was already hot pink? A little more glamour couldn’t hurt!
What can instantly add sparkle and glamour to any space? A chandelier, of course! I had an adorable chandelier I had found at Hobby Lobby, and centered it on the bottom two drawers. I added a little extra length to the “chain” so that it went all the way up to the top of the second drawer down. I chose a white acrylic paint to coordinate with the white knobs purchased at Marshall’s. I used a foam brush to apply the stencil… I am sorry I don’t have any pictures of that, but both hands were occupied during that step and no one else was home to do the honors! Once the stencil dried, I applied Minwax natural paste wax to give it a low lustre finish and protection. I also then cleaned all of the drawers, using a lemon oil product that cleans, freshens up the wood, and smells lovely. Here is the finished product, perfect for a princess!
