I’m Randi from Dukes and Duchesses. I’m so glad to be here again and I have a little back to school project to share with you.
I thought it would be fun to make my soon-to-be-kindergartner a little backpack bag for lunch money or other treasures. He loves the duct tape wallets that he’s seen so I picked flaming duct tape as my material of choice.
To make the bag, start with a short zipper. Since I tend to be a bit cheap thrifty, I used a zipper from my notions stash. It was the wrong size so I cut it to the length I wanted (leaving some extra zipper tape on the sides} and used hot glue at the end to stop the zipper pull from sliding right off. (If you’re using a regular zipper rather than a hefty one, you can sew right across the stopping point instead of using hot glue.)
Cut two rectangles from sheets of duct tape (my rectangles measured 5 3/4 inches by 4 inches) and back them, sticky side to sticky side, with another color duct tape (I used regular duct tape for this part rather than sheets).
Trim any excess from the edges.
Sew the zipper onto the long side of the rectangles. (This is a bit tricky … don’t look too closely at my sloppy seam.)
With right sides facing out, use pieces of duct tape to wrap the remaining three edges closed.
Following manufacturer’s instructions, add a grommet to the corner of the bag.
Use a carabiner to attach the bag to your child’s backpack and fill it up with lunch money, a special snack, a note from mom, or a show and tell treasure.
Enjoy the special back to school moments with your kids and stop by my blog to say hi!
