Rustic and Recycled Tablescape
Hi, I’m Angela, from Angela’s Adventures….a place where I share snippets of my life as a stay at home mommy and my crafting and cooking adventures. My favorite type of project is the kind that I can pull off with mostly recycled materials or items that we already have on hand. Because I love making things beautiful without spending much, I’m super excited to share my “Rustic and Recycled Tablescape” with you today.
This tablescape was created in honor of Earth Day, with as many recycled materials as I could find around my home. First, let’s back track a little and talk about what exactly Earth Day is.
Basically, Earth Day is a day early each year on which events are held worldwide to increase awareness and appreciation of the Earth’s natural environment. Earth Day is now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network, and is celebrated in more than 175 countries every year.
So, in appreciation of the Earth’s natural environment, let’s have a party and let’s celebrate with a recycled tablescape. This party could be for your kids and you could teach them about Earth Day. Or, you could go bigger and have some girlfriends over and serve an “earthy” and organic lunch. Heck, you could even give out little plants or seeds as favors…the possibilities are endless!
To create my tablescape, I first cut large rectangles out of paper grocery bags, with scalloped scissors. These paper bag rectangles will be our place mats.
Next, I made brown paper bag pockets to hold each person’s silverware. To make one of these, all you do is cut a rectangle out of a paper bag and staple it into a pocket shape. After it was stapled, I used a rubber stamp and some green ink to give it a simple design. Lastly, I added some ribbon to dress it up a bit.
The place cards are brown paper bag flowers, with the name written on a scalloped punched paper and then clipped on with a mini-clothespin. Simple. Rustic. Recycled.
A fresh cut flower decorates each place setting to add a simple, natural feel.
For the centerpiece, I painted some regular old tin cans, that we washed and removed the labels from. I also painted an old mason jar that we had in the garage.Tin cans and mason jars paint super easy and they’re such an inexpensive way to add a big pop of color! I ran outside, snipped some cedar branches for my recycled centerpiece and also filled a large vase with pine cones.
I hope this “Rustic and Recycled Tablescape” has inspired you to get creative with items that you have on hand. Let your imagination run and allow yourself to get creative. You’ll be surprised at what you can create with recycled items.
