Leave it to a fireman to teach me how to make the most tasty salsa. It packs a big punch of flavor and there is not a pepper to be found in it. I hate chopping peppers and worrying about the juice and seeds getting on me which leads to getting into my eyes. Anyone else have that problem?
This is one of those recipes that does not have exact measurements so you will just need to go by taste. I was told this is because measuring cups or tablespoons are not in fire station kitchens. Hmmm. They just go by taste. So, there you have it. We will follow their lead.
What you will need in Pictures:
Tomato sauce and diced tomatoes will go in blender.
Chop green onion, red onion, cilantro
Now, the spices and lemon juice.
Pepper, salt, garlic salt, oregano, cumin
To the diced tomatoes and tomato sauce, add all of the veggies. Stir.
Then, as the firemen described it, “dust the top” with the spices then stir.
This is where, “Just go by taste” is the most crucial. Just dust and taste. Dust and taste.
So, who is this mysterious salsa making fireman/paramedic, you ask?
With 15 years experience and dedication to his hometown, I think it is appropriate to call him a hometown hero and that is a lot of years cooking in a firehouse kitchen. A special shout out to all the men at station 5 doing their fire thing.
Tell a fireman thank you for what they do and make this salsa. They may be used to putting out fires but don’t let this salsa fool you. It will create a fire in your mouth but with each chip full you will a punch of flavor. Let it sit in refrigerator for a couple of hours for all of the flavors to combine. Yum!!!
Who knows maybe I can get another secret recipe out of the fire station? If I do, you will be the first to know, CSI readers!
