Day of the Dead Party Set Up & Décor Ideas

Once you have a reason to throw a party, what’s next?

I always have a process that helps me stay organized and get it all done.

With any party. you need a main table for food and this is a great way to show décor. Sometimes you may want several tables for different food and treats. But no matter what table it is, this is your time to shine.

So, I will show you how to decorate a table for a Dia De Los Muertos party or Day of the Dead since that is coming up soon!

Start with deciding what colors you will use

In this case, I liked several bright colors. This is a very colorful holiday so I had fun with it.

Cover the table

I use the same table with every party. Around here, we literally call it the “party” table. It isn’t pretty so covering it is essential. I like to use inexpensive fabric better than tablecloths. Fabric is cheaper in most cases so try to find fabric that works with your theme.

Create a backdrop

In this case, I was inspired by the Christmas décor aisle at Hobby Lobby. This shiny fringe was perfect and very inexpensive. It is a simple backdrop which I like and I just added a sugar skull that I found at Michael’s. Also, I made poms out of tissue paper. You can also buy these pre-made at party stores. With a cute backdrop, people will want to take pictures in front of the table.

Create different heights and textures.

I like to create height so that everything can be seen on the table. For this one, I used actual wood. I love all of the wood pieces that you can find at any craft store. Both Hobby Lobby and Michael’s have great selections of unfinished wood. This also creates different textures. Cake stands work well too even if you aren’t putting cake on it. Break the rules. Better yet, there are no rules!!!

Touches of Décor everywhere

Craft it, DIY it or just buy it. Or do all! I did it all here. I found 3 sugar skulls and bought them but the rest I made. Like this DIY Sugar Skull.

I found a plain skull at The Dollar Tree.

With some paint, paper flowers and creativity, I had a DIY décor piece.

First, I painted it white.

Then added detail and flowers. Easy!

Also, since it is a Mexican holiday and again lots of color, I took some cans that I was going to just throw out. But now, they make cute flower vases.

Oh and the flowers were all bought at Michael’s. All colors and so pretty and bright! I also put some in blue mason jars. Cute vases for not a lot of money!

For the cake, I took 2 decorative straws and just trimmed the same fringe I used for the backdrop to drap across the cake. I placed a sugar skull on there and I was done. Easy!

Main thing to remember is to just be creative! It will all come together!

Display treats in cute ways

I used small treat cups to set out candy. I got these off of Pick Your Plum. You can use large dishes or do individual cups. I think people like just grabbing a cup and eating rather than digging through a big dish, but either way, just make it cute!

I love throwing a good party and decorating for them doesn’t have to seem so overwhelming when you break it down into steps. Just focus on what your guests might want or need. It’s all in the details.

Party on and if you celebrate Dia De Los Muertos, then have fun!!!!

Make it creative, make it colorful and make it all about your guests!
